Dogpatch, San Francisco

Built in the
shipyards’ shadow.

Dogpatch grew up around Union Iron Works and the Bethlehem shipyards at Pier 70, one of the last stretches of San Francisco that still looks like it builds things. Fennel took over a 1912 machine shop two blocks off Third Street, kept the sawtooth roofline and the concrete floor, and put a wood oven where a lathe used to sit.

Third Street runs the length of the neighborhood; the 22‑Fillmore stops two blocks up. Most nights the room fills with people who walked over from the Minnesota Street galleries or got off shift at the boatyard.
